Tiger Woods Withdraw: Woods, a four-time winner of the event, was limping and moving stiffly Saturday. He shot a 9-over par 79.

After just making the cut Friday, Woods slumped to 12-over par for the tournament, which is tied for last.

Saturday’s outcome was the highest score Woods has had during 22 PGA Championship appearances, which spans 81 rounds.

He also made five consecutive bogeys for the first time in a major since turning professional in 1996.

Woods only returned to competitive golf at the Masters in April, 14 months after a life-threatening car crash.

His halting gait and deteriorating game was so striking.

“I just didn’t play well. I didn’t hit the ball very well,” said 46-year-old Woods. “I’m sore.”

PGA of America President Jim Richerson said: “We admire Tiger’s valiant effort to compete here at Southern Hills and wish him the best as he continues to recover from his injuries.”

Woods has already indicated that he intends to play the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews in July.

The 46-year-old won two of his three Opens at the historic Old Course, which he has described as his “favourite golf course in the world”.
