US Open 2024: Sumit Nagal and Rohan Bopanna lead India’s tennis challenge

The US Open begins today, with Sumit Nagal aiming for success in singles and Rohan Bopanna leading in doubles.

The US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year, is all set to take place from today, August 26. India’s ace singles player Sumit Nagal and top doubles player Rohan Bopanna are ready to lead the Indian challenge at the tournament. The competition will be held at Flushing Meadows Park in New York.

The 27-year-old Nagal will be a major hope for India in the singles event. Sumit Nagal is set to become the first Indian male tennis player since 2019 to compete in the singles events of all four Grand Slam tournaments in a single year. The last Indian men to achieve this were Prajnesh Gunneswaran in 2019 and Yuki Bhambri in 2018. Sumit is scheduled to play his first-round match tonight at 1 a.m.

Sumit Nagal in the previous Grand Slams

Currently ranked 72nd, Nagal had a decent start at the Australian Open earlier this year, reaching the second round. However, he struggled to maintain momentum, facing first-round exits at Wimbledon and the French Open. He also failed to advance beyond the first round at the Paris Olympics.

Nagal’s best performance at the US Open came in 2020 when he reached the second round. In 2019, as a newcomer, the 27-year-old surprised everyone by winning the first set against Roger Federer in the first round. Since 2020, he has not progressed past the qualifying stage at Flushing Meadows.

Sumit Nagal’s first match

Sumit Nagal has drawn a favourable first-round match at Flushing Meadows, where he will face Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands, who is ranked 40th in the world.

Rohan Bopanna to play his best game

Rohan Bopanna is expected to make an impact at the US Open this year. Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden are seeded second in the men’s doubles. Last year, they reached the US Open final but lost to Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury. They are also the defending champions of the Australian Open.
