US Open 2023, Day 1 Highlights: Women’s defending champion Iga Swiatek produced a masterful performance to beat Rebecca Peterson 6-0, 6-2. Meanwhile, 3-time champion Novak Djokovic began his quest for his 24th Grand Slam by sailing past Alexander Muller in three straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-3. 7th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas also advanced to the second round, beating former No. 3 Milos Raonic in straight sets, while 4th seed Holger Rune crashed out of the US Open in 4 sets to Roberto Carballes Baena. Other notable players to advance to the 2nd round in the women’s draw were Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff.

Holger Rune vs Roberto Carballes Baena
Fourth seed Holger Rune was knocked out in the first round of the US Open 2023 by Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena. The Dane did not look comfortable throughout the match amid speculations of injuries affecting the 20-year-old.
Carballes Baena has now taken a 2-1 lead over Rune, beating the Dane on both hard and clay.
Novak Djokovic vs Alexander Muller
Three-time champion Novak Djokovic regained the world no. 1 ranking with his straight sets win over Alexander Muller. Djokovic began the two players first meeting by bageling the Frenchman in the first set. The match, which ended at 1 a.m. in the night, saw Djokovic get sluggish in the last set but still prevail 6-0, 6-2, 6-3.

Djokovic has made nine finals at the US Open, winning the tournament three times: in 2011, 2015, and 2018. Muller, on the other hand, was playing his first match at the tournament.
Iga Swiatek vs Rebecca Peterson
World number one and defending champion Iga Swiatek breezed past her round-one opponent Rebecca Peterson in straight sets. Losing just two games in the match, Iga put up a masterclass to send the Swede out. Iga now leads their head-to-head 3-0. This was also the 19th instance in 2023 where the Pole bageled someone.

Peterson now holds a 3-10 win/loss record at Flushing Meadows, having reached the 3rd round in 2018 as her best result. Meanwhile, Swiatek has a 14-3 record at the US Open.
Elena Rybakina vs Marta Kostyuk
Fourth seed Elena Rybakina exacted revenge on Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, who beat her earlier in the year a the Australian Open. Rybakina lost just three games in the match, uttering dominating Kostyuk in every department.
Their head-to-head is now 1-1, with both players beating each other once on hard courts. The Ukranian now has a 3-4 record at the last slam of the year, having never gone past the third round. Rybakina improved her poor record here and now has a 4-4 win/loss record.
