How can Nadal become World No.1?

Currently Nadal has 5620 rating points on the ATP tour that are used to decide the rankings. This means that, he is currently 1265 points behind World No.1 Daniil Medvedev, which therefore means that Nadal needs to get the better of the defending US Open champion as he did in the final of the Australian Open back in January.

With 2000 ATP ranking points on offer at a Grand Slam, Nadal will easily dethrone Medvedev and clinch the No.1 spot if he goes all the  way to lift his fifth US Open title. With a semifinal exit in the Cincinnati Open, the gap between Nadal and Medvedev is withing 2000, so it is a golden opportunity for Nadal to clinch the No.1 spot and the US Open.

  • He was also forced to miss the TMS in Montreal, as he suffered from his recent abdominal rupture.
  • Things could have been lot different for Medvedev as well, as he too was out of a period of time in April and May, having hernia issue.

Nadal still unbeaten in Grand Slam in 2022

The 22-time Grand Slam champion has had a phenomenal 2022, as started with his triumph in Melbourne. Nadal won the Australian Open having beaten Medevdev in a marathon final. This was Nadal’s second Australian Open triumph.

In normal routine, he won his 14th French Open title in June as he once again showed his class and remained unbeaten. While talks were surfacing on a Wimbledon title, he was unfortunate to have got the recurrence of his old injuries and was forced to withdraw after after the quarterfinal win. Since he did not feature in the semifinal match, he is technically still unbeaten in a Grand Slam match in 2022.

If he does succeed in winning the US Open, this will be his fifth title having earlier won the prestigious tournament in 2010, 2013, 2017, and 2019.
