Speaking at a media interaction organised by US Open’s official broadcaster in India Sony Sports Network, when asked who is his favourite to win the US Open title, Purav said, “It’s tough to look past Rafa and Medvedev. If I am to predict, I have to go with the favourites in the men’s side. I have to say it’s gonna be a Nadal-Medvedev final. It’s tough to go against them. I would love to see Alcaraz, Tsitsipas, Sinner, all come in the works. But it’s tough to put them in the same bracket right now.”
He also called Nicky Kyrgios, who was the Wimbledon finalist this year as the darkhorse. “Darkhorse would be Kyrgios. I would love to see Kyrgios win a slam and also would love to see Andy Murray making a deep run as well.”
All the focus during the US Open this year will be on Tennis great Serena Williams as she is set to retire from the sport soon after the tournament. Purav Raja called her a hero and said, “Serena and Venus brought so much to the game. We grew up watching the Williams sisters win and produce so much magical Tennis and became the greatest players in the Open Era. Whatever said and done, US Open 2022 will be the Serena Slam and it will go down as the greatest moment in American Tennis for sure. She is a hero for my daughter, mother and wife and for everybody in the world today. Very sad that it will be the last tournament for Serena.”
Meanwhile, India’s Sania Mirza, who earlier this year announced that she would retire after playing the US Open this year has opted out of the tournament recently due to an injury and has hinted at change of retirement plans. Speaking about it Purav said, “Change in retirement plans means that either she is not going to play or she is prolonging her career. It is debatable. I am not sure. However I will be very sad to see her not play. It will be a huge void for Indian Tennis. Her not playing is a big blow to us. She will be surely missed if she decides to hang up her boots now and if she doesn’t we are eagerly looking forward to see her next year.”
