Daniil Medvedev returns to a Grand Slam tournament after being banned from the Wimbledon this year. Medvedev won his maiden Grand Slam tournament at the US Open in 2021 and enters the year-end Grand Slam this year as the World No.1. He has shown good form in 2022. He started the year with a runner-up finish at the Australian Open after losing the final in a nail-biting five sets against Rafael Nadal. Just ahead of the clay court season he took sometime away from the sport by undergoing a hernia surgery. He wasn’t at his best in the French Open, where he was ousted in the fourth round. However he improved his form by finishing as runner-up at Halle Open and Libema Open. He won his first title this year at Los Cabos Open and just before the US Open made a semifinal finish at the Cincinnati Masters. He is now eyeing title defence at the US Open and is a strong contender for the title.

Rafael Nadal makes his return to the US Open after a two-year hiatus. He last played at the Flushy Meadows in 2019 where he went on to win the title. He missed 2020 season owing to fears due to Covid outbreak and was unable to participate in the last edition after suffering a knee injury. Nadal has been in a terrific form this year as he won the Australian Open title and the French Open title and is now aiming to lift his third Grand Slam title in 2022. He is however not in great touch recently as he suffered abdominal injury at the Wimbledon this year and took a month to recover. He returned to action at the Cincinnati Masters last week but bowed out from the second round after losing to Borna Coric. Nadal however always steps up during Grand Slam tournaments and the Spaniard will yet again be the favourite for the title this year.
