Tiafoe beat Nadal Highlights: Tiafoe stayed true to his words on the eve of the match when he said, “Now I believe I can beat him. If I end up playing him, I’m definitely going to come after him.” Throughout the match he played with the same belief and did not let the Spaniard settle and finally became the first man this year to beat Rafael Nadal in a Grand Slam tournament. Tiafoe also becomes only the third American after Andy Roddick and James Blake to defeat Nadal in a Grand Slam event.

Both the players started off the match positively by winning three service games each. It was in the seventh game that Tiafoe came into the contest as he clinched a crucial break to take lead. The American then went on to hold his next two serves as he won the first set comfortably 6-4.

Having lost the first set, Nadal remained calm. He capitalised on errors from the American in the 10th game of the second set to gain a foothold in the contest to level the scores 1-1. However, Tiafoe quickly came back into the contest in the third set. After both the players won three service games each, he fired a winner to break Nadal in the 10th game and then remained strong on his serve to get back the lead against the Spaniard in the contest.

The fourth set too was very challenging as Nadal broke Tiafoe in the fourth game to move 3-1 ahead. Tiafoe however stuck to his game plan,  and worked his way back into the set. He managed to break Nadal immediately in the next game and from then on he showcased complete dominance as he won the next five games to seal the historic victory in front of a raucous crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium,

“I don’t even know what to say right now, I’m beyond happy, I’m almost in tears,” Tiafoe said in an on-court interview. “I can’t believe it. He is definitely one of the greatest of all time. I played unbelievable tennis today but I really don’t know what happened.”

At 4-3 [in the fourth set], when I went up 40/0, my legs were like cement,” Tiafoe said. “I just needed to get out of the game and then pray to god that I don’t have to serve for it. I was lucky enough to get out of that game. I came out not giving Rafa all the respect. I came out to win a tennis match if front of you guys.”
