In the Women’s singles, apart from Venus Williams, Sofia Kenin is the other Grand Slam Champion to be granted a wildcard to the main draw. Other Americans to be give a direct entry to the main draw includes CoCo Vandeweghe, Elizabeth Mandlik, Peyton Stearns and Eleana Yu. Australia’s Jaimee Fourlis and France’s Harmony Tan, who recently defeated Serena Williams at Wimbledon this year are also among the wildcard entrants.

42-year old Venus Williams missed the majority of the season this year as she was down with Sjogren’s syndrome in 2011, an auto-immune disorder that results in fatigue and muscle pain. She returned at the Wimbledon by featuring in the Mixed Doubles. She returned to action in Singles by participating in Citi Open, Canadian Open and Cincinnati Masters, In all the three tournaments, she faced first round exits. Like Venus, Sophia Kenin too missed four month this year due to injury and returned at the Citi Open, facing first round defeat. She is yet to win a single match since her return.

Other wildcard entrants like Elizabeth Mandlik, Peyton Stearns and Eleana Yu are making their Grand Slam main-draw debuts after earning their wild cards. Mandlik won the US Open Wild Card Challenge, which rewards the American man and woman who earns the most points at summer hard-court with a US Open wild card. Stearns won the 2022 NCAA singles titles at the University of Texas and 17-year-old Yu, also , is the USTA Girls’ 18s national champion.

2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem receives Wildcard 

After recovering from injury over the last year, Dominic Thiem makes his return to the US Open through a wildcard. He suffered a wrist injury at Mallorca Open in 2021 and missed nearly a year. He made his return at the Marbella Challennger where he bowed out from the first round. He featured in five consecutive tournaments on the ATP tour including the Frenc Open but bowed out from the first round in all the tournaments. Much recently he reached the quarterfinal at Swedish Open and Austrian Open and semifinals at Swiss Open. Thiem is ranked world No. 228 in singles.Other high-profile players who have earned the wildcards includes 34-year-old Sam Querrey, a former world No. 11 who reached the tournament’s quarterfinals in 2017.

Other American players like 20-year-old Emilio Nava, who reached the boys’ singles finals at the 2019 Australian and US Open, 16-year-old Learner Tien, a junior who won the USTA Boys’ 18s National Championship recently,, 23-year-old J.J. Wolf, who recently reached a personal-best singles ranking of No. 83 and 19-year-old Ben Shelton, who won the NCAA singles title in May.

The 2022 US Open is all set to begin on August 29. Daniil Medvedev and Iga Swiatek, who are ranked No.1 in the world rankings will be the top seeds in the tournament. The main draw for the event is yet to be released
