Ash Barty vs Shelby Rogers LIVE in US Open 2021: World No.1 Tennis player Ash Barty was knocked out of contention by Shelby Rogers in yet another David v Goliath result at the ongoing US Open 2021. Rogers claimed an epic 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 and came from behind in the final set to clinch the match in the tie-breaker. The American had clinched the first set with ease as Barty struggled to get her serve going, before the Australian bounced back with a classy second set to force a decider.

Barty lead 5-2in the third set before Rogers held her nerve and pushed the world No.1 to the brink and eventually claimed the biggest result of her career. The Australian twice served for the match in the third set, but lost her cool when it mattered most, eventually losing 6-2 1-6 7-6 (7-5).  Rogers was in tears as she embraced Barty at the net and buried her face in her hands after Barty’s final shot went long.

US Open 2021: World No.1 Ash Barty crashes out, Rogers claims epic three-set win in round 3

Ashleigh Barty had struggled in the first set, especially with her serve as Rogers claimed a shock lead. However, in typical fashion, the World No.1 made a stunning turnaround to clinch the second set in just seven games to force a decider. The Aussie won seven straight service games and was serving for the match before Rogers had other ideas. With the New York crowd behind her, the American made life difficult as Barty lost her trademark composure, and conceded the double break and her hopes of winning a major US Open title.

It was Rogers’ first win over Barty, who had a 5-0 record over the American coming into the US Open contest. The Australian has been broken four times while serving for the match in the Flushing Meadows, despite only playing three games. Her third-round exit means Rogers will now face British teen sensation Emma Raducanu in round four.

Speaking after the game Rogers said, “I think tonight going on the court I told myself I didn’t want to lose the same way I lost the last five times against her. I just tried to do things a little bit differently. In the first set I mixed in some high balls, I was super patient with her slice because she’s not going to miss one very often. I know that very well.”

She added, “I guess I have to thank her for teaching me a lot of lessons. I think I journal quite a bit, take notes on players, scout, things like this. Half my book is on Ash at this point, you know. It’s the same thing: She doesn’t miss a ball. I think what I’ve learned most from her is that she’s No.1 for a reason. It was going to take everything I had tonight to beat her. I gave everything I had and got the win. That’s what it comes down to.”
