Title defence has become a big topic of discussion in the last few Grand Slams. None of the women’s players in singles are able to win the title once again. Serena Williams had last defended her 2016 Wimbledon title. Since then, no women’s player is able to win the title once again. Since the 2015 US Open, we have had 15 first-time champions, including Ash Barty (Wimbledon), Barbora Krejcikova (Roland Garros) and Naomi Osaka (Australian Open) in 2021.

Alexander Zverev

Tokyo Olympics Gold champion had ended World No.1 Novak Djokovic’s campaign. He is in the fray to win his maiden Grand Slam and leave a mark in the US Open 2021. The German is heading into the contest after winning the Cincinnati Masters ATP title. The World No.4 is yet to lose a single match in the last 10 matches, including four sets win over Djokovic in Olympics. He has a win-loss ratio of 14:5 in 2021 hardcourt events. Last year, he had made it to the finals of the US Open before losing to Dominic Thiem who has pulled out of the tournament due to an injury. He will begin his US Open campaign against Sam Querrey of the US at Arthur Ashe Stadium on August 31.

“I’m looking forward to it because I know where I stand, I know how I’m playing, and I hope I can continue the work and hopefully play even better in New York,” Zverev said as quoted by Reuters.

The absence of Roger Federer or Rafa Nadal from the U.S. Open presents a good chance for one of the young guns in men’s tennis to snare a Grand Slam title.
