US Open 2021 LIVE Day 5: Simona Halep vs Elena Rybakina

12th seeded Simona Halep has defeated Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in round 3 of the US Open. She won the match 7-6(13), 4-6 and 6-3 after losing the second set against the Kazakshtani. As a result, Halep progressed to round 4 of the US Open for the first time since 2016.

Halep had earlier dominated Kucova in the second round. She had also defeated Camila Giorgi in the opening round. The Romanian’s US Open best is playing in the semifinals (2015). Halep has an impressive win-loss ratio of 11:3 in 2021 hardcourt events.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Carlos Alcaraz Garfia

In the biggest upset of the US Open 2021 so far, 3rd seed Stefanos Tsitsipas was knocked out by Spanish prodigy Carlos Alcaraz Garfia in round three of the year ending Grand Slam. The 18-year-old Spaniard held his nerve and clinched a decisive 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, 0-6, 7-6 win over the Greek ace. He will now face Peter Gojowczyk in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Naomi Osaka vs Leylah Annie Fernandez

Defending champion Naomi Osaka’s bid for a 5th Grand Slam title was brought to a cruel end as she was handed a defeat in round three by Canada’s Leylah Annie Fernandez. Osaka had clinched the first set on Saturday, but her Canadian opponent kept pushing her, eventually breaking late in the second set to seal the tie-breaker and force a third set decider. The former World No.1 looked a shadow of her former self as Fernandez pushed her to the brink, before clinching a monumental 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 win. Fernandez will now take on Germany’s Angelique Kerber, who is ranked No. 17 in the world

Daniil Medvedev vs Pablo Andujar

World No.2 Daniil Medvedev defeated Pablo Andujar of Spain in round 3 at Louis Armstrong Stadium. He was heading into the contest on the back of straight wins against Dominic Koepfer and Richard Gasquet. Medvedev is enjoying a terrific form at the moment with wins in 9/10 matches. He has an exceptional win-loss ratio of 27:4 in 2021 hard court events. The 25-year-old is chasing his maiden Grand Slam.
