US Open 2021 Final: Emma Raducanu beat Leylah Fernandez

British qualifier Emma Raducanu beat Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3 in a battle of two unseeded teenagers to win the U.S. Open women’s title on Saturday.

The 150th-ranked Raducanu is the first qualifier to win one of the four majors and the 18-year-old also became the first British woman in 44 years to win a Grand Slam title.

The first Grand Slam final — men or women — to be contested by two unseeded players was an improbable matchup that no one could have predicted, featuring 150th-ranked qualifier Raducanu and little-known Fernandez ranked 73rd.

All the more remarkable was that Raducanu’s march to the title required 10 matches, including three wins in qualifying, and she did it without dropping a single set along the way.

US Open 2021 Final: Novak Djokovic vs Daniil Medvedev

The US Open 2021 Final will see the top two ranked players in the men’s rankings collide as Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev will lock horns at the Flushing Meadows. Medvedev booked his place in the summit clash for the second time in three years, as he breezed past Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. Djokovic, meanwhile had a much tougher draw, having won a five-set thriller against Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Alexander Zverev. The duo had faced off in the Australian Open final earlier this year, with the Djokovic triumphing in straight sets in Melbourne.

Should Djokovic win, it will be his 21st Grand Slam title, the most by a men’s singles player, ahead of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who are both tied at 20 each. The final against Daniil Medvedev will be his ninth at the Flushing Meadows and his 31st overall, tying Roger Federer’s record for the most number of Grand Slam final appearances. He will also join an exclusive club of having won all four Grand Slam titles in a single year, stamping his greatness in the sport. Medvedev meanwhile will be looking to be the player who denied Djokovic history, and seek revenge for his Australian Open final defeat, while claim his maiden Grand Slam title.

Indian kick-off time: Monday, 1:30 AM IST.
