US Open 2021: Naomi Osaka advances to round 3

Defending champion Naomi Osaka has progressed to round 3 of US Open 2021. This is because her Serbian opponent withdrew due to medical reasons. World No.2 was supposed to face off Olga Danilovic after coming on the back of a straight-set win over Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic. The latter had also registered a straight-set win in the opening set. Osaka will next face Leylah Fernandez or Kaia Kanepi in the third round. As a result, the Kristína Kucova – Simona Halep match was moved from Court 17 to Arthur Ashe Stadium.

US Open 2021: Medvedev thrashes Koepfer to advance into 3rd round

World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday defeated Dominic Koepfer to advance into next round. He won the match in three straight sets 6-4, 6-1 and 6-2. The Russian ensured he dominated Koepfer in the last two sets after breaking in round 1. Notably, Medvedev is one of the favourites at the US Open this time. He had earlier entered into round 2 with a three-set win against Richard Gasquet. Medvedev has won 27 out of 31 hardcourt events in 2021. The 25-year-old has also won 9 out of his last 10 matches.

US Open 2021: Casper Ruud crashes out as van de Zandschulp enters round 3

In a major upset, eighth-seed Casper Ruud has crashed out of the ongoing US Open 2021. Botic van de Zandschulp of Germany completed the upset in four sets battle. The match lasted for 3 hours and 5 minutes. The latter had earlier won a thrilling five-set epic against Carlos Taberner. Zandschulp had made it to round 2 in Wimbledon and French Open respectively. He will look to progress in the fourth round and improve his grand slam result. World No. 117 has now won five matches in a row including US Open Qualifiers. He has won 14 out of 19 hardcourt matches in 2021 and could make a US Open upset.

US Open 2021: Aryna Sabalenka into R3

World number two Aryna Sabalenka sent Slovenian Tamara Zidansek packing in just under an hour on Wednesday, rolling through to the third round of the U.S. Open with a 6-3 6-1 win. The Belarusian broke her opponent in the first game and never ceded the momentum as Zidansek struggled with her serve, committing four double faults, and making 19 unforced errors.

Sabalenka fired off 24 winners compared to just eight from her opponent in the lopsided match, as she dominated from the baseline and made only 10 unforced errors. It was a significant improvement from her opening match on Monday, when the Wimbledon semi-finalist beat Serbian Nina Stojanovic despite 42 unforced errors over three sets. Sabalenka faces American Danielle Collins in the third round as she continues her bid for a maiden major title.

US Open 2021: Simona Halep cruises into Round 3 with straight sets victory against Kucova

US Open LIVE: Coco Gauff knocked out as Sloane Stephens moves to round 3

Sloane Stephens pulled off a huge upset as she knocked teenage sensation Coco Gauff in the second round of the US Open with a 6-4, 6-2 win. The duo contested evenly before Stephens clinched a vital break after Gauff’s double fault. The 28-year-old did not look back and just motored along to a victory, sealing her place in the third round. Stephens dominated from the baseline as her 17-year-old opponent struggled to match up, in what will be a disappointing loss for the World No.23 and the 17th seed at the US Open 2021.

Stephens will now face the winner of the matchup between three-time Slam champ Angelique Kerber against Anhelina Kalinina. The clash was scheduled to be played on Wednesday but was postponed for at least another day following bad weather amidst a tornado warning in the region.

US Open 2021: Tsitsipas progresses to round 3, Mannarino knocked out

Stefanos Tsitsipas made it to round three for the second consecutive season after he sealed a hard-fought four-set win over Adrian Mannarino from France. The Greek ace who defeated Andy Murray in round 1, clinched a 6-3, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-0 win on Thursday to set up a clash against 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz of Spain. Stefanos Tsitsipas clinched his 50th win at the US Open after he went past Adrian Mannarino on Thursday. The Greek ace seeded third for the Grand Slam, took two hours and 41 minutes to get the past the Frenchman in what was certainly a hard-fought win.

The 23-year-old has never made it past the third round in the US Open and will be a staunch favourite when he faces next-gen star Carlos Alcarez. Against Mannarino, the Greek superstar was at his best, hitting 53 winners, twice of what his opponent managed at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
