Reetika Hooda, India’s sole heavyweight wrestler (76kg) qualified for the Paris Olympics, is facing a hurdle before she even steps onto the mat. The first-ever female U-23 world champion from India is pleading with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to include her coach, Mandeep, in the support staff contingent travelling to Paris.
Mandeep Excluded from approved list
Mandeep’s name was missing from the official list of support staff sanctioned by the IOA for the Olympic Games. Back in May, Reetika had requested the IOA to allow both her coach and physiotherapist to travel with her to Paris for the prestigious event. She followed this up in June with a similar plea to the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).
Uneven treatment raises questions
What has caused further concern for Reetika is the approval given to other wrestlers’ coaches. Unlike her, all other four members of the women’s wrestling team will have their coaches by their side in Paris.
Vinesh Phogat will be accompanied by her Belgian coach Woller Akos. Antim Panghal will have the support of both her coaches, Bhagat Singh and Vikas (travelling as her sparring partner).
Anshu Malik will be guided by her father and coach, Dharamvir, while Nisha Dahiya will travel with coach Amir. The lone male wrestler, Aman Sehrawat, will be backed by Ali Shabanov.
Reetika Hooda Feels Let Down
Expressing her disappointment, Reetika stated to PTI, “I was surprised to see that everyone has coaches travelling with them. Antim has been sanctioned both her coaches, and I haven’t even been given one.” She further added, “Initially, I was told no personal coaches would be allowed, but now everyone seems to have them except me.”
With the wrestling competition starting on August 5th in Paris, Reetika hopes the IOA will address her concerns and allow her coach to travel with her. Having a familiar face and her coach’s guidance by her side could be a significant factor in her performance at the Olympics.
