Ugandan athlete set on fire by boyfriend after Paris Olympics return

This incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks against athletes in the region. In 2023, Ugandan Olympic steeplechaser Benjamin Kiplagat was found dead with multiple stab wounds, while in 2022, Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete Damaris Muthee was tragically strangled to death.

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through the athletic community, Ugandan distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei, who recently competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, has suffered severe burns after being set ablaze by her boyfriend in Kenya. Cheptegei, who finished 44th in the Olympics, is currently fighting for her life with 75% of her body covered in burns.

Attack in Trans Nzoia County

The horrific attack took place in Cheptegei’s home in Trans Nzoia County, located in western Kenya as per AP. According to local authorities, the 25-year-old athlete was attacked by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, during a heated argument on Sunday. Ndiema reportedly purchased a jerrican of petrol, doused Cheptegei with it, and then set her on fire.

Both Cheptegei and Ndiema sustained severe burns and are receiving specialised treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city.

Land dispute with Rebecca Cheptegei?

Reports indicate that the altercation between the couple stemmed from a dispute over a piece of land that Cheptegei had purchased in Trans Nzoia. The land, located near several athletic training centres, was intended to be a place where she could focus on her training. However, the argument escalated into violence, leading to the tragic incident.

Local police commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom confirmed that neighbours had heard the couple arguing over the land shortly before the fire broke out. A report filed by the local chief also corroborated these accounts, stating that the land dispute was the central issue in their fight.

Disturbing trend of violence

This incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks against athletes in the region. In 2023, Ugandan Olympic steeplechaser Benjamin Kiplagat was found dead with multiple stab wounds, while in 2022, Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete Damaris Muthee was tragically strangled to death. These events have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of athletes, particularly those living in remote or isolated areas.

Call for Justice and support

As Cheptegei battles for her life, there is growing demand for justice and increased support for athletes facing domestic violence and other threats. The athletic community, both in Uganda and internationally, has expressed its shock and sadness over the incident, calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate legal action against Ndiema.

Cheptegei’s parents, who had supported her decision to buy land in Trans Nzoia to be closer to her training facilities, are devastated by the attack. They, along with many others, are now hoping for her full recovery and for justice to be served.
