Tokyo Olympics: Despite the ongoing pandemic and fear of an 11th-hour cancelation, the postponed Olympics will go ahead as scheduled, reemphasized the chef-de-missions (CDMs) of all 206 competing nations in their meeting.
“Only six officials per contingent will be allowed. This has been done to minimize the risk of getting Covid-19 infection,” a source informed TOI.
India’s chef-de-mission BP Baishya and other members are considering sending a reduced number of athletes and just allowing the flagbearers Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh.
India will be sending a 228-strong contingent, including 127 athletes, IOA President Narinder Batra said on Tuesday.
- Out of the 127 athletes, 67 are male and 52 female participants, Batra said during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction with Olympic-bound athletes.
“The total Indian contingent for Tokyo Olympics will be 227. We are fighting for 85 medal events,” Batra said in the virtual interaction.

The president of IOA Narinder Batra arrived in Tokyo on the 20th of July and will miss the opening ceremony due to a mandatory 3-days quarantine period.
It was decided in the meeting that those undergoing quarantine periods will be not allowed to be in person for the much-anticipated opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games.

He continued to warn that anyone who thinks the pandemic is over because cases are under control in their country is living in “a fool’s paradise.”
