Tokyo Olympics – IPL 2021: To create some atmosphere in the empty stadiums, Tokyo Olympics organizers have decided to use ‘VIRTUAL FAN WALLS’ during the Olympics games. It is worth noting the BCCI also used the same feature during the conduct of IPL 2020 & IPL 2021 when they were played in the spectator less stadiums. According to the information available, viewers of the Tokyo Olympics will be able to interact with the Games via digital features including video walls within venues and a ‘cheer map’ that will visualise virtual cheering by fans around the world.

Tokyo Olympics – IPL 2021: The last two IPL seasons are being played in the empty stadiums. In order to build the atmosphere for the television audience and integrate sponsored elements, BCCI has been using the same feature of virtual walls and cheer maps.

Now the Olympic Broadcast Service that is responsible for producing the Olympic Games LIVE signal will use the feature to enhance the coverage from the empty stadiums. The features have been developed by the International Olympic Committee and Olympic Broadcasting Services, in partnership with Olympics broadcasters.

OBS CEO Yiannis Exarchos said: “Our ambition is to bring the magic of the athletes’ achievements to the world on an unprecedented scale. Technology is going to play a critical role and allow us to bring fans ‘inside the venue’ virtually. This is an important ambition, not just for the fans, but also for the athletes as they compete on the world’s biggest stage.

“The IOC and OBS have been able to benefit from the great partnerships we have with the world’s leading media companies and sponsors and with Tokyo 2020. We also believe these new digital innovations will leave a legacy which we will build on at future editions of the Olympic Games.”

The IOC also said that Tokyo 2020 would get “more coverage by broadcast partners than any previous Olympic Games across both linear TV and digital”.

Fan Video Matrix: The digital features include the ‘Fan Video Matrix’, that will display on screens within venues 5-second video selfies recorded by fans.

The ‘Cheer Map’: will involve a cheer button embedded on broadcasters digital platforms that fans can use to clap or cheer during live events. This activity will be captured and presented on a global map showing where in the world fans are virtually cheering from. The map will be available as a video stream to broadcasters and also shown on screens within venues.

‘Athlete Moment’: At certain venues, ‘Athlete Moment’ stations will allow athletes to interact live with their family and friends straight after their events.

OBS said it is producing 30 per cent more content for Tokyo 2020 than for Rio 2016, amounting to 9,000 hours. For the first time, full live coverage will be produced in 4K resolution with immersive audio. The IOC said the coverage will include “never-seen-before camera angles, 360-degree replays, multi-camera live Virtual Reality (VR) coverage and more analytical data processed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) than at any previous Olympic Games”.

Tokyo Olympics start from 23rd July and will be played till 8th August. As per the information available, the Olympics will be broadcasted LIVE in more than 200 countries with more than 75 media partnerships weaved in by IOC. In India Olympics will be broadcasted LIVE on Sony Sports Network & SonyLIV.
