Tokyo Olympics Hockey: India vs Ireland: Rani Rampal’s India Women Hockey team win in a do or die battle vs Ireland – India Women hockey team grab their first win of the Tokyo Olympics vs Ireland. This win keeps their quarterfinals dream alive. They are now level at points with Ireland. They will play against the Republic of South Africa in their last match of Pool A. A late goal by Navneet Kaur against Ireland gave Indian women its first win. It was a crucial win under pressure. Ireland will have a tough match against Great Britain, but if they lose and India wins against the Republic of South Africa, India will go through as they will finish 4th in the pool.

The Indian women’s hockey team defeated Ireland 1-0 here at the Oi Hockey Stadium North Pitch on Friday.

As a result, India’s hopes of making it to the quarter-finals of the women’s hockey event remain intact. Earlier, the Rani Rampal-led side had suffered defeats in its first three group-stage games. The first quarter between India and Ireland saw no goals and after the end of the first 15 minutes, the scoreline remained 0-0.

A similar story was on the offer in the second quarter and at the halftime mark, the scoreline remained the same and it was Rani Rampal’s side that was feeling the pressure going into the third quarter.

The third quarter also saw no goals, however, Navneet Kaur finally broke the deadlock in the fourth quarter and she gave India a lead with three minutes left to play.
In the end, India managed to hang on to the advantage to score a 1-0 victory.

Wins have been hard to come by for Team India, as they slipped to defeat in all their three games in the Pool so far.
India opened their campaign with a 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands, before going down 2-0 to Germany and 4-1 to Great Britain.
With no points on the board and a largely inferior goal difference, India will need massive wins in their remaining contests against Ireland and South Africa.

Sjoerd Marijne, the chief coach of the Indian women’s hockey team, was livid with the loss to Great Britain and minced no words when quizzed for his thoughts. He said, “This was our worst match. We always try to play for a six (out of 10) for each individual, and I don’t think each individual today played for a six. Bad decisions, bad choices and I’m pretty disappointed by this.”
