India at Tokyo Olympics – Golf @4:00 AM- Diksha Dagar, Aditi Ashok (Women’s Individual Stroke Play Round 1)
Aditi Ashok, India’s top ranked female golfer will hope to make her mark at her second Olympics campaign when she starts off on Wednesday. Accompanying her will be 20-year-old Diksha Dagar, who arrived in Tokyo only on Sunday and was virtually the last player to qualify for the event. Ashok qualified for Tokyo Games in the 45th place in Olympic rankings will be her second appearance at the Games. She also won the Indian Open and the inaugural Qatar Open titles.
Meanwhile, Dagar became only the second Indian female golfer after Aditi Ashok to win the Ladies European Tour and became the youngest Indian woman to do so at the age of 18. The 20-year-old received a surprise invitation from the International Golf Federation to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics following a late withdrawal of South African golfer Paula Reto. Both Indian athletes will hoping to make their mark at the games after male golfers Udayan Mane and Anirban Lahiri failed to impress.
Athletics @5:35 AM- Neeraj Chopra (Men’s Javelin Throw Qualification – Group A)
Neeraj Chopra has been earmarked as India’s best hope for a medal in athletics and the 23-year-old will be keen to make his mark in his Olympics debut. A national record holder, Chopra is a Commonwealth and Asian Games medallist and will be aiming for a podium finish in Tokyo. The 23-year-old holds the national record throw of 88.07m, meaning a spot in the finals is a bare minimum for Chopra.
Athletics @7:05 AM- Shivpal Singh (Men’s Javelin Throw Qualification – Group B)
Shivpal Singh meanwhile also sealed his maiden Olympic ticket with an 85.47m throw in March 2020, will also be vying for a place in the final in group B. Singh won the silver medal at the 2019 Asian Championships but his form in the lead up to the Olympics has been far from satisfactory, with the 26-year-old managing a throw of only 77.31m at the National Inter-States in June.
India at Tokyo Olympics – Boxing @11:00 AM- Lovlina Borgohain vs Busenaz Sürmeneli (Women’s Welterweight Semifinal)
Lovlina Borgohain is only the third boxer to clinch an Olympic medal for India, and she could overshadow the achievements of Vijender Singh and Mary Kom with a win on Wednesday. Borgohain is assured of a medal but will be aiming for gold, with India having not won the top podium spot in the last two Olympics.
The 23-year-old secured a final-four spot with a brilliant 4-1 win over double World Championship medallist Chen Nien-Chin of Chinese Taipei. Her opponent, Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey is the top seed in the weight category. The 23-year-old won the World Championships in 2019, an event where Borgohain clinched the bronze. The Turkish pugilist bagged a bronze in the 2019 European Championship and comes into the clash after defeating Ukraine’s Anna Lysenko 5-0.
Hockey @3:30 PM – India vs Argentina (Women’s tournament semi-final)
India women’s hockey team is one win away from clinching a first Olympic medal as Gurjit Kaur’s strike catapulted them in the semi-finals of the Summer Games. Rani Rampal and Co. made a great escape to qualify for the knockouts before putting in a performance for the ages to beat World No.2 side Australia in the quarter-finals.
The campaign is already India’s best at the Summer Games, and should they pull off a result against Argentina, they will finish in the top two spots on the podium. Argentina meanwhile clinched a comfortable 2-0 win over Germany in their quarter-final clash. Argentina are ranked 5th in the world and are on the back of a five-game unbeaten run having lost their opener against New Zealand.
Wrestling @TBD- Ravi Kumar Dahiya vs Tigreros Urbano Oscar Eduardo (Men’s Freestyle 57kg 1/8 Final)
Ravi Kumar Dahiya is seeded No. 4th at Tokyo will start his medal quest against Colombia’s Oscar Eduardo Tigreros Urbano in the freestyle 57kg category event. The two-time Asian champion Dahiya has got a great draw and should reach Semi-Finals without any fuss and remains one of India’s biggest medal hopes at the Summer Games. His opponent, Tigreros Urbano Oscar Eduardo, won the silver in the men’s 57 kgs Pan American Championships in 2019, but will have his back against the wall in his bout against Dahiya.
