To start off the men’s event, Srikanth Kadambi defeated Joran Kweekel 21-12, 21-14. Sai Praneeth also defeated Robin Mesman 21-4, 21-12 in a game that he thoroughly dominated to win the 2nd men’s singles event. Sameer Verman made sure that India’s results in men’s singles remained intact as he defeated Gijs Duijs 21-6, 21-11.
In the men’s doubles, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Ruben Jille and Ties Van Der Lecq 21-19, 21-12. After that, M.R. Arjun and Dhruv Kapila beat Andy Buijk and Brian Wassink 21-12, 21-13.

In the opening clash of the tie, India’s lead women’s singles player at the Uber Cup, Saina Nehwal was forced to retire from her opening match against Spain’s Clara Azurmendi when she felt a sudden pain in her groin. Thomas and Uber Cup- India vs Spain: For the second match of the tie, Malvika Bansod propelled India towards a fightback as the 20-year-old got the better of world No 71 Beatriz Corrales in straight games. The left-handed Indian shuttler overwhelmed Spaniard by 21-13, 21-15.
In the third match, doubles pair Tanisha Crasto and Rutaparna Panda edged India ahead when they defeated Paula Lopez and Lorena Usle 21-10, 21-8.
Thomas & Uber Cup- India vs Spain: The fourth match saw Aditi Bhatt giving India the decisive lead in the tie. She defeated fellow 18-year-old Ania Setien in straight games by 21-16, 21-14.
In the second doubles match of the tie, Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost to Clara Azurmendi and Beatriz Corrales by 18-21, 21-14, 17-21.
India’s Uber Cup team is now scheduled to play Scotland on October 12 followed by Thailand on October 13.

@14:45 PM: Saina Nehwal retires with injury against Spain
In the opening clash of the tie between Spain and India, India’s lead women’s singles player at the Uber Cup, Saina Nehwal was forced to retire from her opening match against Clara Azurmendi when she felt a sudden pain in her groin here at the Ceres Arena in Aarhus on Sunday.
Before retiring from the match, the Indian narrowly lost the opening game 20-22 to the world no 58 Azurmendi. With that, Saina was then unable to continue the second game.
“There was a certain catch in my groin. I was surprised at how it happened,” Saina said as per Olympics.com. “I was trying to get back my rhythm and I couldn’t get it and I had to give it up because it was hurting when I was taking long lunges.”
Asked what this means for the rest of the tournament, the 31-year-old replied, “I think let us see the next three, four days, how it is. There are two more matches, so I just want to see how it goes. I don’t want to take any sudden decision at the moment because my body feels good but this groin issue has to go.”
