Thomas & Uber Cup 2024: HS Prannoy braves health issue to beat Indonesia’s Antony Ginting

HS Prannoy is crucial to India's chances in the Thomas & Uber Cup 2024, and despite suffering malfunction of the muscle lining in the esophagus, he continues to perform.

India’s world No. 9 shuttler HS Prannoy is country’s one of the biggest hopes, when it comes to the Paris 2024 Olympics. And to get to a medal at the Olympics, he has to shine at the Thomas & Uber Cup 2024 as well. And the veteran is doing just that. In the final league match against 2022 edition’s finalists Indonesia, HS Prannoy gave a winning start to Team India, as he got the better of WR-7 Antony Ginting 13-21, 21-12, 21-12.

While the result of this tie doesn’t really matter, as India has already made it to the quarters, but keeping the wins going in a tournament like the Thomas & Uber Cup is really important. More so for Prannoy, who is perhaps not operating at his 100%. On Tuesday, it was reported that he faced a gastric issue, where his food ‘couldn’t go down’.

“What I was feeling was when I eat the food doesn’t go down,” Prannoy said. “Whenever I train, the food comes up and forward to the chest side and I need to vomit. It is kind of related with the acid reflux obviously. The food is not able to do get down. I can feel the food coming out, that’s where my breathing goes for a toss.

Dip in Form in 2024 Could be Due to Medical Condition

Despite having an excellent 2023, this year has been rather quiet for Prannoy. In fact the shuttler opened up and said, that the problem came about a few months back. “I couldn’t eat much because I was afraid it would affect the playing schedule. I was ok to not eat and play; the nausea was even worse than not having anything in the stomach. So that’s why I lost 4-4.5 kilos in the last two-three months.”

And that showed in his performance too. In the Badminton Asia Championships, he was ousted in the round of 16 by Lin Chun-Yi. At the All England Championships, he lost in the first round itself. Similar was the case at the French Open, where he lost in the first round. At Indonesia Masters also, he could not go beyond the Rd of 32.
