‘They were all confused’: Archery coach’s rant after women’s team loss to Netherlands at Paris Olympics

The Indian women's archery team was knocked out of the Olympics following their defeat in the quarter-finals.

India had a very bad day in the archery event at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday. The medal hopeful Indian women’s team of Deepika Kumari , Bhajan Kaur, and Ankita Bhakat failed to deliver their best as they lost to the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

The Dutch trio of Quinty Roeffen, Gaby Schloesser, and Laura van der Winkel defeated the Indian team in three straight games with scores of 51-52, 49-54, and 48-53.

They never score less than an 8 – Coach Mahato

After the disappointing loss, the women’s team coach, Purnima Mahato, expressed her disappointment and blamed the poor performance on the wind.

In a conversation with RevSports after the game, she said, “It became so confusing out there. Even at their worst shot, they never hit below 8, but today it was 6. It was shocking. We all are shocked.”

She also mentioned that the wind did not favour the Indian athletes. “They were all puzzled and confused. They prepared themselves for the wind direction at the venue, but couldn’t understand how the wind acted” she said.

More archery events are to come

India still has a long way to go in the archery event at the Paris Olympics 2024. Events for the men’s team, women’s singles, men’s singles, and mixed events are awaiting a lot of action in the upcoming days.
