Indian tennis has seen many greats, including Leander Paes, Rohan Bopanna, and many more. In women’s tennis, a talent emerged in the 2000s named Sania Mirza, who won three Grand Slams in doubles events. However, during her career and even after her retirement, India couldn’t find any notable talent in the women’s tennis ecosystem. As India continues to hope and search for promising players in women’s tennis, let’s take a closer look at the rising stars in Indian women’s singles tennis.
Sahaja Yamalapalli
Currently, India’s top-ranked women’s player, Sahaja Yamalapalli, is ranked 284th in the WTA Rankings. In July this year, the 23-year-old experienced a pivotal moment in her career by becoming only the third Indian woman tennis player to win an ITF pro title, triumphing at the SoCal Pro Series in the United States. Hailing from Hyderabad, she now stands alongside the legendary Sania Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam champion, and Karman Thandi in achieving this milestone.
Vaishnavi Adkar
Vaishnavi Adkar is another promising young tennis player. Currently ranked 688 in the WTA, she has shown encouraging results at a young age. Recently, she reached the finals of the ITF event in Bengaluru. She was also sold for the highest price in the Pro Tennis League in 2023. If she receives more international exposure, she could do wonders for Indian tennis.
Shrivalli Bhamidipaty
Shrivalli Bhamidipaty is a promising 22-year-old tennis player from Hyderabad. She has made good progress on the national and international circuits. Recently crowned the national champion, she proudly saw her name added to the DLTA Complex’s list of champions, even though she opted out of this year’s Fenesta National Championship to better prepare for upcoming international events.
Her journey has been impressive; she reached the final of an ITF event in Indore and competed successfully in tournaments across the USA, Thailand, Korea, Chinese Taipei, and Australia. Notably, her back-to-back quarterfinal finishes in international events in Perth propelled her ranking to a career-best No. 318.
With aspirations of breaking into the top 200 and qualifying for the Australian Open, Shrivalli is focused on honing her skills.
