Thailand Open 2022: World No.7 Lakshya Sen, who is the highest-ranked Indian in the BWF rankings has pulled out of the upcoming Thailand Open.   • Lakshya Sen has performed exceptionally well in this year that saw him break into the Top 10 in the world rankings.
  • He started the year by winning the Indian Open title and continued his run by finishing as runner-up at German Open and All England Championships.
  • His performances made him the first-choice men’s singles player in the Thomas Cup, which India won for the first-ever time by defeating Indonesia 3-0 in the final.
  • Lakshya Sen suffered from food poisoning in the tournament and wasn’t at his best as he lost both the quarterfinal and semifinal in the tournament.
  • He however bounced back in the final and drew first blood against Indonesia by defeating Anthony Ginting in three sets.
  • He now opted to miss the Thailand Open and will look to take a break for nearly a month before getting back on the circuit for Indonesia Masters in June.

Fourth seed Chirag-Satwik duo withdraw 

The World No.8 pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, who were the fourth seed in Thailand Open, decided to skip the event at the last moment. It is learnt that Chirag suffered niggles during the Thomas Cup, where the duo played a pivotal role by losing just one game out of six matches. They were about to face Indonesia’s Wahyu Nayaka and Ade Yusuf Santosa in the first round at Thailand Open.

The other Indians to pull out of the tournament are Parupalli Kashyap and Sameer Verma, World No.37 Kashyap, who is struggling with his form this year was about to face Kidambi Srikanth in the first round. He has now been replaced by France’s Brice Leverdez.

Meanwhile, Sameer Verma who was placed in the same quarter that had Srikanth Kidambi has also decided to give the tournament a miss. He was about to face Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke in the first round. Verma suffered injury during the Badminton Selection Trials and pulled out of the fight for top spot. It looks like he still hasn’t recovered completely from the injuries.

Indian women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand too pulled out of the tournament as Gayatri is yet to recover from hip injury. Earlier, Gayatri also missed the Uber Cup and her partner Treesa Jolly partnered with Tanisha Crasto.

The BWF Super 500 tournament begins on 17 May and the finals is scheduled to take place on 22nd May. The other Indians in the fray are World No.7 PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy.
