The tennis superstar Novak Djokovic return to sport after a month-long break took a surprising turn at the Italian Open on Friday. The world No. 1 took a blow to the head, not from his opponent, but from an unexpected source.
Novak Djokovic struck by water bottle
Following his dominant victory over Corentin Moutet, Novak Djokovic was signing autographs for fans when a seemingly innocuous incident unfolded.
A fan, leaning over to offer an autograph book, accidentally dislodged a water bottle from their backpack. The aluminum bottle struck Djokovic on the head, causing him to stumble and fall to the ground.
Accidental cause confirmed at Italian Open
Video footage quickly emerged, clarifying that the incident was entirely unintentional. Thankfully, Djokovic escaped serious injury. Tournament organizers confirmed he received medical attention and later assured fans of his well-being via social media.
“Thank you for the messages of concern,” Djokovic wrote. “This was an accident and I am fine resting at the hotel with an ice pack. See you all on Sunday.”
Novak Djokovic upset
While understandably shaken by the incident, Djokovic reportedly sported a slight bump on his head but avoided stitches. He did skip his post-match press conference but is expected to compete in his upcoming matches.
“He was upset, but he seems OK,” said an Italian Tennis Federation spokesperson. Tournament organizers are reviewing footage to identify the fan involved.
