Serena Williams’ sports card Auction: America Tennis star Serena Williams’ popularity is second to none across the globe. She has made a mark with the flurry of Grand Slam titles in her cabinet and hence is idolized by many. While she always makes headlines with her performances, this time around her autographed sports card is the talk of the town.

An autographed Serena Williams rookie card printed in 2003 has become the most expensive women’s sports card after fetching 44,280 dollars at auction last weekend, New Jersey-based Goldin Auctions said.

The previous record was 34,440 dollars for a rookie card of former U.S. soccer player Mia Hamm sold in June. ESPN reported the Williams card was bought by alternative-asset trading platform Alt on behalf of a private client.

People are accepting women’s trading cards as collectables,” ESPN quoted Goldin Auctions founder Ken Goldin as saying.

“We’ve seen that gradually increase over the past three years, with a heavy increase in the second half of 2020 up through 2021. On forum boards and social media, I see people looking for women’s sports cards.

“The effect you have with Serena is that there are a lot of people putting together GOAT collections. They want Pele, Ali, Jordan, Tiger, Brady … and they include Serena. I think that’s the single biggest impact that is lifting her cards above all other women athletes,” Ken Goldin added.

Australian Open: Novak Djokovic breathes a sigh of relief as unvaccinated can play at Australian Open after quarantine, report US media

Serena Williams’ sports card Auction: The 40-year-old Williams, who is still hunting a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title, has not competed since limping out of her first-round match at Wimbledon in August.

She also pulled out from this year’s final Grand Slam, US Open, due to a torn hamstring. Williams, a six-time winner at Flushing Meadows, has had an injury-marred season due to which she skipped the Olympics in Tokyo and also opted out of the Cincinnati Masters.

Serna Williams’ quest for a record 24th Grand Slam title is getting elongated further and further. She has been beaten in her four Grand Slam final appearances since winning her last major in 2017.

Williams was handed a defeat in the 2021 Australian Open by Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the semifinal but that doesn’t take away anything from the World’s one of the greatest tennis players. Moreover, if she recovers well from her hamstring injury, she will have a chance at the next year’s Australian Open.
