Sixth seed Ons Jabeur was ousted in straight sets by Marketa Vondrousova in the final. The Czech went on to become the first-ever unseeded Women’s Singles player to lift the title in the grass court major in the Open era.
After losing the final, Jabeur was reduced to tears as she collected her runner-up silverware. “It will be tough to speak because this is very tough,” she said. “I am going to look ugly in the photos so that’s not going to help. I think this is the most painful loss of my career.”
“It’s going to be a tough day for me today. I’m not going to give up. I’m going to come back stronger and win a Grand Slam one day,” she added as Centre Court erupted in applause for her words.
Crowd favourite Ons Jabeur made it to the final after pulling off victories against defending champion Elena Rybakina and second seed Aryna Sabalenka. However she was completely dominated by Vondrousova in the final. This is Jabeur’s third successive loss against the Czech this year.
She has also lost for the third successive time in a Grand Slam final over the last 12 month. Her first heartbreak came last year at the Wimbledon final, where she lost to Elena Rybakina. She then finished second best at the US Open, losing the final against Iga Swiatek.
