Tareek pe tareek: Vinesh Phogat fans frustrated after CAS extends date for silver medal verdict

Some believe it's just a joke, while others think politics is delaying Vinesh’s silver medal verdict. See all the ‘frustrated fans’ reactions’ after CAS once again extended the date.

You can get lots of two-hour movies, but getting a judgment in a day seems almost impossible. But what happens when even simple cases start taking a lifetime? That’s what’s happening: “tareek pe tareek, tareek pe tareek” (date after date, and more dates). The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which handles athletes’ appeals and resolves sports-related disputes through arbitration, has control over all Olympic sports. They have once again extended the verdict in Vinesh Phogat’s case, which is becoming unbearable for some. Vinesh initially requested to reschedule the gold medal match, but for CAS, it was impossible. However, they accepted her appeal to be awarded a joint silver medal. Now, it seems like the case result will take as long as Indian trains do.

What is Vinesh Phogat matter?

Vinesh Phogat reached the final of the women’s 50 kg weight category after defeating the defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, she threw former European champion Oksana Livach of Ukraine out of the ring and then defeated Pan American Games champion Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba with a 5-0 scoreline.

However, Phogat did not receive any reward or Olympic medal as she was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight on the day of her bout. As a result, she filed a complaint with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but once again, her verdict has been extended.

The CAS ad hoc division president has allowed Dr Annabelle Bennett, Sole Arbitrator in the Vinesh Phogat vs UWW & IOC matter, an extension until 9:30 IST August 16. Hence, the scheduled zoom meeting with IOA president PT Usha and Senior Counsel Harish Salve has been postponed
