Syed Modi International: PV Sindhu ends title jinx, wins low-key finals to register 1st title victory since 2019

PV Sindhu was at her very best on Sunday as she romped to a straight games win over young Malvika Bansod in the final of the Syed Modi International. The two-time Olympic champion took just 35 minutes to seal the title in her favour in a display of superiority and class in Lucknow. The win was Sindhu’s first BWF title since 2019 and her first at the Syed Modi International in five years.

While Sindhu is well above the heights of a BWF Super 300, the win in a rather low-key event will do her confidence the world of good having fallen short far too many times in recent tournaments. The 26-year-old won the bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, and reached the semi-finals of the Indonesian Open, the French Open and the World Tour Finals last year, failing to seal the title in any of the events.

As for young Malvika Bansod, the 20-year-old gave a good account of herself in a back against wall clash versus PV Sindhu. Malvika impressed with her placement and made Sindhu work hard for her win, especially towards the end of both games. It has been great couple of weeks for the Indian prodigy who defeated Saina Nehwal last week, and the 20-year-old will look to build on further.
