The Australian Open draw is finally out, and India’s only bet in men’s singles, World no. 96 Sumit Nagal has been handed a tough draw. He will be up against 26th seed Czech player Tomas Machac in the opening round. The trouble for Nagal won’t end there as he will then face USA’s Reilly Opelka, and is in the same draw as Novak Djokovic.

Meanwhile, talking about Machac, he had won the gold medal in the mixed doubles at the Paris Olympics with Katerina Siniakova. On the other hand, there will be a lot of expectations from Sumit Nagal, who beat Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the first round of the Australia Open 2024. That meant, he had become the first Indian singles player in 35 years, to register a win against a seeded player, at a Grand Slam.
All Eyes on Indian-origin Player Nishesh Basavareddy
Meanwhile, there is a lot of interest surrounding Indian-origin US player Nishesh Basavareddy, who will be making his Grand Slam debut at Australian Open 2025. In the first round itself he will be up against Novak Djokovic. Basavareddy is already ranked 133rd in the world, and tipped to achieve greater things in his career.
At the Auckland Open, Nishesh Basavareddy has made it to his first 250 semis, after beating the likes of Alejandro Tabilo, Alex Michelsen, and will face Gael Monfils in the next round.
