After a dismal 2022, Nagal’s ranking fell to 500 last year. Nevertheless, he finished 2023 ranked 138 thanks to a fantastic season. At the Australian Open 2024, the 26-year-old played incredible tennis with momentum on his side.

After winning all three of his qualifying round matches, he advanced to the second round by defeating Alexander Bublik, the 23rd-ranked player in the world, in the first round. Even though he ultimately lost, he had a great start to the year.

He backed up his Australian Open performance with a fantastic win in the tournament in Chennai. Sumit did not lose a single set in the tournament.

Paris Olympic qualification scenario for Sumit Nagal

Sumit also helped his cause for a qualification berth in the Paris Olympics 2024. After the Chennai Open win, Sumit is up to No. 83 in Race To Paris. There are 64 available quotas in singles. However, with withdrawals and the maximum per-country rule in place, these quotas are typically available until WR 75. In order to have a chance at hitting the quota, he should ideally earn another 250–300 ranking points before June to make it to Paris.
