Squash wizard Anahat Singh gets TOPS backing keeping in mind LA 2028

Amidst the intense preparations for the Paris Olympic Games 2024, the Sports Ministry’s Mission Olympics Cell (MOC) has broadened its horizon to include the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. In a significant move, three promising squash players Anahat Singh, Abhay Singh, and Velavan Senthilkumar, have been inducted into the Development Group of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), signalling a strategic shift towards long-term Olympic planning.

Squash, a sport that has steadily gained popularity in India, received a major boost with its inclusion in the TOPS program. Notable players like Saurav Ghosal, Dipika Pallikal, and Joshna Chinappa have been instrumental in keeping the momentum alive, paving the way for the emergence of a new generation of talents. Among these rising stars are Anahat Singh, Abhay Singh, and Velavan Senthilkumar, who have earned their spots in the TOPS Development Group.

Cyrus Poncha, the Secretary General of the Squash Racquets Federation of India (SRFI), lauded the inclusion of squash in the TOPS program, describing it as a pivotal moment for the sport in India. He emphasized the broader implications of this recognition, highlighting the potential for increased participation, enhanced training opportunities, and greater international exposure for Indian squash players.

Anahat Singh: A Rising Star in Squash

At just 16 years old, Anahat Singh has already made significant strides in her squash career. With an impressive track record that includes numerous national titles and international victories, she embodies the promise of Indian squash on the global stage. Expressing her gratitude for being included in TOPS, Anahat acknowledged the crucial support it would provide in her journey towards international success.

Anahat expressed optimism about the growing interest in squash, particularly with its inclusion in the Olympics. She noted a surge in junior participation and highlighted the heightened competition as countries vie for Olympic medals. With the prospect of squash making its debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, Anahat remains focused on her goal of securing India’s first Olympic medal in the sport.
