Monte Carlo Masters Highlights: Novak Djokovic waived off a challenge from Ivan Gakhov to clinch a 7-6, 6-2 victory in the second round at Monte Carlo Masters 2023. Gakhov gave a good fight in the first set and took the set into the tie-breaker challenging the top seed. Djokovic however managed to win it to take the lead in the contest. The Serbian then gave a good comeback and sealed the contest in straight sets. Earlier, Andrey Rublev has entered the third round. The Russian defeated Spain’s Jaume Munar 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round on Tuesday, 11th April 2023. Novak Djokovic vs Ivan Gakhov
Novak Djokovic won his first match in the ATP Tour since his return after a month long hiatus. The top seed looked rusty in the first set against a lowly-ranked Ivan Gakhov. The World No.198 gave a spirited challenge and after holding his three service games, managed to break Djokovic’sserve to take 4-3 lead.
The Serbian rised to the challenge and immediately broke the youngster’s serve to level the set 4-4. Soon Gakhov led 5-4 and was leading 30-0 and was threatening to take the game away from Djokovic. The World No.1 however maintained his calm and won the next four points straightaway to hold his serve and levelled the contest.
The set finally went into the tie-break and Djokovic eventually won it. In the second set, Djokovic was back at his best as he dominated the contest and won the set comfortably 6-2.
Stefanos Tsitsipas began his title defence at the Monte Carlo Masters with his opponent Benjamin Bonzi retiring midway from the second round contest. Tsitsipas broke his opponent early and was leading 2-0 in the first game. Bonzi soon seeked medical attention at his injured left wrist.
He managed to resume the contest and even managed to win a game. However trailing 1-4, he was unable to continue and retired after 22 minutes into the contest.
Andrey Rublev survived a second-round scare at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters to earn his 250th tour-level win. The fifth seed rallied from a set down to defeat Spaniard Jaume Munar 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the clay-court event.
Rublev, who reached the final in the Principality in 2021, overpowered Munar, clubbing 36 winners and breaking Munar’s serve six times to advance after two hours and 12 minutes. It was a strong turnaround after losing the first set.
