The shocking news came earlier that Vinesh Phogat, India’s first-ever female wrestler, reached the final of the Olympics. The 29-year-old, who’d beaten Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzmán in the semifinal late in the day on July 6, was disqualified from her final bout after being found overweight. However, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Indian government haven’t backed down yet and have lodged a complaint with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Indian government doing their all
Addressing the issue in parliament, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that IOA President PT Usha has spoken with the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and asked her to take the necessary action.
“Today her weight was found to be 50.1 kg, and she was disqualified. The Indian Olympic Association has lodged a strong protest with the International Olympic Committee. IOA President PT Usha is in Paris; the Prime Minister spoke to her and asked her to take the necessary action. The government provided every facility to her, including personal staff.” said the Indian Sports Minister in the parliament.
