Casper Ruud vs Liam Broady
British wildcard entrant Liam Broady stunned Fourth seed Casper Ruud in the second round. The Briton delighted the home fans with a stunning final two sets to seal a 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory and reach the third round for the second consecutive year.
This is Broady’s biggest win of his career and the biggest shock of Wimbledon 2023. Ruud has reached three of the last five Grand Slam finals but had struggled at Wimbledon in his three previous appearances. With the loss he has yet again failed to make it to the third round in his career’s four appearances at Wimbledon.
Alexander Zverev vs Gija Brouwer
Germany’s Alexander Zverev fired 20 aces past Dutch qualifier Gijs Brouwer to move into the Wimbledon second round with a hard-earned 6-4 7-6(4) 7-6(5) win.
Daniil Medvedev vs Adrian Mannarino
Third seed Daniil Medvedev was two games from victory against Adrian Mannarino on Thursday evening before darkness descended on the All England Lawn Tennis Club. Up two sets to love, Medvedev led 4-2 in the third set before the Frenchman staged a late charge to extend the match into a second day of play.
Medvedev will take a 6-3, 6-3, 4-4 lead into Friday, with Mannarino to serve when the match resumes.
Andy Murray vs Stefanos Tsitsipas
Andy Murray will return to court on Friday needing one more set to reach the third round at Wimbledon for just the second time since 2017. The Scot was leading World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-7(3), 7-6(2), 6-4 on Thursday when play was suspended for the day on Centre Court at 10:38 p.m. The decision was made to stop the match given that a conclusion before the 11 p.m. curfew was very unlikely.
Women’s Singles
Elena Rybakina vs Alize Cornet
Defending champion Elena Rybakina booked her place in the Wimbledon third round but only after surviving a torrid second set against experienced Frenchwoman Alize Cornet, who needed a medical timeout after slipping late in Thursday’s contest.
On paper the 6-2 7-6(2) win looked comfortable enough but it was far from straightforward as Rybakina’s power game which initially looked devastating began to malfunction badly.
Jessica Pegula vs Cristina Bucsa
Pegula, the top-ranked American at World No.4, held off a second-set charge by 78th-ranked Bucsa of Spain before notching a comfortable 63-minute win on No.1 Court.
In the first meeting between the pair, Pegula was headed for a win in under an hour, holding two match points at 5-2 in the second set. But Bucsa crept back into contention, reaching 5-4 and 0-30 on the Pegula serve before the American was able to regroup and power to victory.
