Daniil Medvedev vs Arthur Fery
Third seed Daniil Medvedev fought off the spirited efforts of British world number 391 Arthur Fery with a 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the 20-year-old wildcard on Wednesday at Wimbledon 2023. The Russian is coming off a surprise first round at Roland Garros 2023 at the hands of Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil and showed no sign of nerves as he sailed past the home favourite.
Novak Djokovic vs Jordan Thompson
Novak Djokovic began his title defence with a straight set win against Pedro Cachin in the first round. The Serbian looks to extend his form as he will face Australian Jordan Thompson in the second round.
Jordan Thompson has made it to the second round at the Wimbledon for the third successive year. He had to play a five-setter in the first round. Playing against Brandon Nakashima, the Australian lost the first two sets. However he bounced back to seal a 2-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 victory to set up clash against Djokovic.
Women’s Singles
Iga Swiatek vs Sorribes Tormo
World number one and four-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek breezed past Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-2, 6-0 on Wednesday to enter the third round of Wimbledon 2023.
The Pole started a little slowly and dropped serve early having broken her opponent, but moved through the gears in what was her first match on Centre Court.
Once the 22-year-old found her range with her lethal forehand, the four-times Grand Slam champion was unstoppable as she cruised into the third round.
Maria Sakkari vs Marta Kostyuk
The No.8-seeded Maria Sakkari, playing her first-round match a day late, produced a scintillating first set — only to lose to Marta Kostyuk 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. Wimbledon remains the only Grand Slam in which Sakkari has failed to reach the second week.
The unseeded Kostyuk beat Sakkari for the first time in three tries — and a Top 10 player for the first time in her career.
