- Iga Swiatek eneterd the tournament at Madrid after successfully defending her title at the Stuttgart Open 203.
- The World No.1 began her campaign at Madrid in the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Julia Grabher.
- She then clinched a victory in identical scores against 28th seed Bernarda Pera in the third round.
- In the fourth round against 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, she dropped a set after playing the tie-breaker. But she managed to defeat the Russian with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 win.
- Swiatek will be in action in her fourth successive semifinal in the WTA Tour. Apart from the Stuttgart Open, she has won the Qtar Open so far this season.
- Petra Martic is aiming to reach her maiden semifinal in the Madrid Open in her career.
- The 27th seed received a bye from the first round. In the second round she faced Laura Siegemund and clinched a straight set win.
- The Croatian faced Anhelina Kalinina in the third round. She had to win the contest in three sets.
- In the third round, she met 11th seed Barbora Krejcikova. Against the Czech she clinched an upset win by winning the contest 6-3, 7-6.
- Martic’s best performance this year is a runner-up finish at the Linz Open. She last played in the quarterfinals at Madrid way back in 2019.
Swiatek vs Martic Head-to-Head: Both the players faced each other only once so far in the tour. Swiatek won the contest. It was at the Indian Wells and the 21-year old clinched a straight set win. Swiatek will yet again be the favourite against Martic.
Swiatek however isn’t taking Martic lightly, “She can really play well on clay. I think it’s going to be tough. She’s a really experience player so you never know in quarterfinal,” she said ahead of the contest.
