Daniil Medvedev vs Aslan Karatsev

Former World No. 14 Aslan Karatsev reaffirmed his return to top form with a stunning upset of second seed Daniil Medvedev on Tuesday.

Having dropped as low as No. 129 in the ATP Rankings on 17 April after a modest 12 months, the 29-year-old Karatsev defeated seeded players Botic van de Zandschulp, Alex de Minaur and Medvedev in consecutive rounds in Madrid. Now up to No. 89 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings as a result of his exploits in Spain, he is feeling confident as he prepares for his maiden ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final.

“I was struggling last year,” said Karatsev after improving his ATP Head2Head record against Medvedev to 2-1. “I’m really happy with my game [now], so well see what [happens next].”

Taylor Fritz vs Zhang Zhizhen

Zhang Zhizhen made history on Tuesday at the Mutua Madrid Open, where he became the first Chinese player to reach an ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final.

The 26-year-old accomplished the feat in style, saving three match points to rally past eighth seed Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(8). It marked his first Top 10 win on his third attempt.

It has been a breakthrough week for the Chinese star, who upset World No. 13 Cameron Norrie in the third round. Healso defeated Denis Shapovalov in the second round.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Mayar Sherif

No.2 seed Aryna Sabalenka overcame a surging Mayar Sherif 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 in exactly 2 hours at the Mutua Madrid Open to reach her fifth semifinal in seven tournaments this year.

Australian Open champion Sabalenka trailed the unseeded Sherif by a set and a break, but from 2-1 down in the second set reeled off 11 of the next 12 games to improve her 2023 record to 27-4. The 2021 winner in Madrid, this result marks the second time the 24-year-old has made the last four in the Spanish capital

Maria Sakkari vs Irina Begu

For the first time in her career, Maria Sakkari is through to the semifinals at the Mutua Madrid Open after she outlasted No.31 seed Irina-Camelia Begu in the quarterfinals of the Mutua Madrid Open on Tuesday night, 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-2.

Sakkari entered the match leading Begu 2-1 in their career head-to-head, with both of her wins coming in three sets. Having won the opener in both of those victories, Sakkari had to come from behind for the first time to extend her winning record against the Romanian
