Carlos Alcaraz vs Albert Ramos Vinolas
Carlos Alcaraz cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 victory against fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas in Rome. With the win, Alcaraz guaranteed himself a return to No. 1 in the ATP Rankings on 22 May, following the ATP Masters 1000 event.
With his 12th straight victory overall, Alcaraz improved to 30-2 this season, including a perfect 14-0 mark against players outside the Top 50. “It wasn’t easy. The first round of every tournament is really tough and of course Albert Ramos, especially on clay, is a really tough opponent,” Alcaraz said of his debut performance, which was delayed by rain earlier in the day.
“I had to adapt my game really quickly to be able to get though. The conditions weren’t easy as well, the rain, the waiting all day. I didn’t know if I was going to play or not. But I’m really happy with my performance at the end and really happy to be able to play in the next round.”
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Nuno Borges
Fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas will begin his campaign in the Italian Open by facing Nuno Borges in the second round. Tsitsipas is aiming to lift an ATP Title ahead of the French Open this year. He enters Rome after bowing out from the quarterfinal at Madrid Open.
Nuno Borges sailed past Dusan Lajovic 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the tournament. It was the 26-year old’s first victory in the tournament. He is making his debut in the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.
Daniil Medvedev vs Emil Ruusuvuori
Third seed Daniil Medvedev haven’t had best of results in the clay court tournaments this year. He bowed out from the quarterfinal at Monte Carlo Masters. At the Madrid Open, he suffered fourth round defeat.
Medvedev, who has won four titles this year on hard courts will look to get back to form ahead of the French Open. The Russian faces Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round.
Emil Ruusuvuori began his campaign at the Italian Open with a three-set win against Ugo Humbert. His best performance on clay so far is third round appearance at Barcelona Open. The Finnish will face big challenge against World No.3 Medvedev in the upcoming contest.
