ATP Tour: Line judges in Men’s Tennis will be a thing of the past as the ATP is set to automate the line-calling by 2025. The ATP on Friday has announced that the Electronic Line calling technology (ELC Live) will be implemented across all Tennis matches in the Tour by 2025. The automation move is aimed at reducing human errors in the matches. With this new rule, the job of the line-judges is set to get redundant. Follow Tennis News and LIVE updates on InsideSport.IN

The ATP has taken the call to finally go ahead with complete automation after nearly six years of trial run. The ELC has so far been widely used on the hard and grass courts. The technology is not used on clay courts as the judges still rely on ball marks on the surface for the line calls. However the ATP has clearly stated that the ATP Tour will adopt the technology across all kinds of surfaces within two years.

“This is a landmark moment for our sport and not one we’ve reached without careful consideration. We have a responsibility to embrace innovation and new technologies. Our sport deserves the most accurate form of officiating,” said ATP CEO Andrea Gaudenzi.

When was the ELC Live first trialled?

The new technology was first trialled at the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2017.

What difference will the ELC Live bring to the table?

Currently none of the clay court tournaments use even the hawk-eye system. Even today, the on-field judges rely on ball marks on clay. However this gives room to many human errors and has raised many controversies and disagreements between a player and the umpire.

The hawk-eye though has been active in the tour since 2006 on clay courts and hard courts. However if a player makes two unsuccessful challenges, the player is bound to lose the opportunity to review a decision yet again in the set.

The ELC Live will put an end to all these. One of the biggest advantage with the new technology is that no time will be lost due to reviews. This system completely eliminates the delay that will be caused by the replay challenge process that is currently in place.

Secondly it completely eliminates any kind of a human error that may sometime prove costly in a crucial match situation. It will also put to an end the instances of playing arguing with the line judges over a wrong call.
