Indonesia Open Highlights: Chirag Shetty & Satwiksairaj Rankireddy win maiden Super 1000 title

Asian Champions and World No.6 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have won their maiden BWF Super 1000 title. The seventh seeded Indian pair defeated Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the final of the Indonesian Open on Sunday, 18th June 2023.

Indonesia Open Highlights: Asian Champions and World No.6 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have won their maiden BWF Super 1000 title. The seventh seeded Indian pair defeated Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the final of the Indonesian Open on Sunday, 18th June 2023.

It is also the Indian pair’s first-ever victory against the Malaysian duo after eight meetings. By winning the Indonesian Open, they have also created history by becoming the first-ever Indian pair to win a BWF Super 1000 tournament.

With the win at the Super 1000 tournament, they now have a victory each in a Super 300 (Syed Modi), Super 500 (Thailand and India Open), and Super 750 (French Open) tournaments. Apart from this they have also won the gold medals at the Asian Championships, Commonwealth Games and the Thomas Cup.

“We had prepared very well for this event. We knew the crowd will be supporting us. They have supported us all week. This has been amazing week for us. We played amazing badminton today. We didn’t have good head-to-head record against them, so wanted to play one point at a time and it fetched the result for us,” said Satwiksairaj after the match.

The Indian pair were slow to get off the block in the first game. They were trailing 3-6 initially. However they took five successive points and went up 8-7. The Malaysians soon levelled the scores but succesive errors from them helped Chirag and Satwik enter the interval with a slender 11-9 lead.

After the interval the Indians continued to stay ahead and clinched the first game comfortably 21-17. In the second game, both the pairs started off aggressively. The scores were level 6-6. The Indian pair yet again raced ahead towards the end of the first half and entered the interval with a 11-7 lead.

It soon bevame an one-way contest as the Indian duo went on to take a massive 18-11 lead. They had six championship points at hand. But the Malaysians made it interesting by saving four of those. However a net-error in the end from Aaron Chia gave the victory to the Indians.
