Badminton Asia Championships: After a hectic European tour in the BWF Tour, the focus now shifts to the Asian Badminton Championships. The continental tournament is scheduled to get underway in Dubai on 25th April 2023, Tuesday. Top players like Jonathan Christie, Anthony Ginting, Lee Zii Jia, Akane Yamaguchi, An Se-young will all be in action in the tournament. PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy headlines India’s action in the tournament. Both the players are the eighth seed in the Men’s and Women’s Singl;es respectively. Men’s Singles

HS Prannoy is the only seeded Indian player in the Men’s Singles. He is placed in the third quarter of the draws. The eighth seed will begin his campaign by facing Myanmar’s Phone Pyae Naing in the first round. Naing is ranked 279th in the world. In the second round, Prannoy will face the winner between Chico Dwi Wardoyo and Dmitriy Pyae Naing.

The only other seeded player in the quarter is Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia. The Malaysian is the third seed and he will begin his campaign by facing Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long.

Lakshya Sen meanwhile is present in the top quarter. The World No.24 will face a big test in the first round as he will meet seventh seed Loh Kean Yew. The Indian leads the head-to-head record against Yew 4-2. He will be aiming to extend his lead. If Lakshya enters the second he is likely to face either a qualifier or Jordan’s 103rd ranked Bahaedeen Alshannik.

Kidambi Srikanth is in the second quarter. He will face Bahrain’s lowly-ranked Adnan Ebrahim in the first round. The unseeded Indian is likely to face Japan’s Kodai Naraoka in the second round, who is the fourth seed.

PV Sindhu leads India’s challenge in the Women’s Singles. She is the eighth seed and begins her campaign by facing Chinese Taipei’s Wen Chi Hsu. Sindhu finds herself in the final quarter. The only other seeded player apart from Sindhu here is the second seed An Se-young. Sindhu will face challenge from either Japan’s Saena Kawakami or China’s Han Yue in the second round.

Saina Nehwal will be in action after her first round exit from the Orleans Masters. She will get her Asian Championship campaign underway by facing a qualifier in the first round. Nehwal is likely to face challenge from China’s fifth seed He Bing Jiao in the second round. Nehwal though leads the hea-to-head record 2-0 against the Chinese.

India’s Aakarshi Kashyap and Malvika Bansoid will also be in action in the tournament. While Malvika Bansod is set to face top seed Akane Yamaguchi, Akarshi Kashyap will take on seventh seed Ratchanok Intanon.

Men’s Doubles will be led by sixth seeded Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. They are in the third quarter and will kickstart their campaign against Malaysia’s unseeded Tan Kian Meng and Tan Wee Kiong. The Indian duo are likely to face Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan in the third seed.

MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila, who reached the quarterfinal recently at the Orleans Masters are in the first quarter. They will begin their campaign against eighth seed Malaysian pair Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi.

Krishnaprasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala are the third pair representing India. The unseeded duo will face Japan’s fourth seeds Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi in the opening round.

Women’s Doubles

In the Women’s Doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are the highest ranked Indians. The World No.20 pair are unseeded in the tournament. They will face Indonesia’s Lanny Mayasari and Ribika Sugiarto in the first round. They are likely to set up clash against South Korea’s sixth seeded Jeong Na Eun and Kim Hye Jiong.

Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam are the only other Indian pair in the Women’s Doubles. They are set to begin their campaign against Meilysa Puspitasari and Rachel Rose of Indonesia in the first round. The Indian pair are yet to win a match in the season so far.
