Badminton Asia Championships Highlights: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty create history, win historic gold in Badminton Asian Championships 2023 – Watch Highlights

This is the first-ever gold medal for India at the Badminton Asia Championships in the men’s doubles category. Dipu Ghosh and Raman Ghosh won a bronze medal in 1971 when they reached the semi-finals of the competition. Meanwhile, Dinesh Khanna is the only gold medal winner for India in the men’s singles category in the continental championships. He won the men’s singles title back in 1965.

Both the pairs showed great fight right from the start of the contest. The Indian pair trailed just by a small margin of 10-11 at the mid-game interval in the first game. After the break, the Indians managed to take 13-12 lead. However two successive net-errors helped the Malaysians to get back the lead.

They soon lost the momentum and the Malaysian pair took six straight points to go up 18-13. They soon won the first game 21-16. In the second game, the Malaysians continued their dominance and entered the interval with a 11-6 lead.

Under pressure, the Indians held their nerves and made a strong comeback. Trailing 7-13, they took five successive points and reduced the deficit to 12-13.At 13-14, a net-error from Teo Ee Yi allowed them to level 14-14. Errors continued to mount from the Malaysian side that let the Indians take the lead. They soon reached the game point leading 20-17 and yet another net error from the Malaysians helped them win the second game and the contest went into the decider.

In the third game the neck-to-neck battle between the players ensued. The Malaysians managed to enter the interval witha  slender 11-10 lead. Chirag-Satwik pair fought back well in the second-half of the game and soon took the lead. A smash from Chirag Shetty helped them get to three championship points.

The Malaysians managed to save two, however a smash from Satwiksairaj Rankireddy sealed the match in the favour of the Indians. Sokn after the win, Shetty stated, “I am over the moon. I and Satwik worked really hard for this medal. I am happy that we have finally won the title.”

“I am grateful for all the support we have got during the Badminton Asia Championships. It’s a great feeling to win this tournament for the first time and I am sure we will win more such titles in the future. We will continue to work hard to bring laurels to the country,” concluded Rankireddy.
