A bag containing a computer and two USB memory sticks holding police security plans for the Paris Olympics 2024 was stolen from a train at the capital’s Gare du Nord station. The bag belonged to an engineer from Paris city hall, as confirmed by police late on Tuesday.
The engineer had placed the bag in the luggage compartment above his seat before changing trains due to a delay, where he later discovered the theft.
The engineer stated that the stolen items contained sensitive data, particularly the municipal police’s plans for securing this year’s summer Olympics. An investigation into the theft is currently underway by the regional transport police. However, Paris City Hall, was unable to provide immediate comment on the incident. .
Paris Olympics 2024 to start from July 26
With the Paris Olympics scheduled from July 26 to August 11, security measures are of paramount importance. Approximately 2,000 municipal police officers and 35,000 security personnel will be deployed during the Games.
Given past terrorist attacks in Paris, such as the Bataclan incident in 2015, heightened security measures are imperative.
The Paris Olympics anticipate a significant police presence, with around 30,000 officers mobilized daily, while the opening ceremony along the River Seine is expected to draw about 300,000 spectators.
