After winning her third round contest in the US Open qualifiers by defeating Heather Watson 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, Bejlek was seen on TV shaking hands with her opponents. She then ran towards a man who is said to be her father and they hugged each other before she hugged another man, who was her coach. During this celebration, both the father and coach were seen patting her on the backside and this caught the eye of the netizens who have started giving mixed reactions to the celebration. The video since then has gone viral with some fans calling it “inappropriate” and “creepy”.
The following are some of the reactions on Twitter for the gesture of Sara Bejlek’s coach and dad.
Yeah, I’m sorry, I don’t care if it’s her dad, dad/coach, relative etc. you shouldn’t be doing this by patting her on the behind numerous times. I don’t want to hear if they do it “there.” They travel enough probably to know it’s not viewed as appropriate. She’s 16!!! Not 6! https://t.co/2DlztboGby

“Creepy” is one way to describe it, but “criminal” is more accurate. (And those who think it’s not so bad because it’s her father? That’s just as disturbing.) Needs to be reported. https://t.co/IcbytVaDTr

However, some social media users also pointed out that that the manner of the celebration is “appropriate” and “normal” as such hugs are normal in some cultures. However, Bejlek was perfectly fine with the embrace as she was seen smiling and gesturing towards the crowd later.
The 16-year old will make her debut at the US Open by facing Russia’s Ludmilla Samsonova on Tuesday. Apart from Bejlek’s victory, the qualifiers at the US Open this year turned out to be a memorable one for Cxech Republic Tennis as her compatriots 17-year old Linda Noskova and Linda Fruhvirtova also qualified for the main round of the tournament.
