Sania Mirza Retires: End of an era as India ace tennis star announces retirement, confirms 2022 as last season

  • Sania Mirza is the only women’s player to play in the main draw of all Grand Slam tournaments- Australian Open (R3), French Open(R2), Wimbledon(R2) & US Open (R4).
  • She has won the Australian Open (2016), Wimbledon & US Open (both 2015) in women’s doubles.
  • She won Australian Open (2009), French Open (2012) & US Open (2014) in mixed doubles.
  • The 35-year-old has also clinched the Tour finale twice in 2014 & 2015.  She has also won a total of 14 medals– Asian Games, CWG & Afro-Asian Games.
  • She reached World No.1 in doubles on April 13, 2015– the pinnacle of WTA Rankings.

Other notable achievements

  • Sania was named one of the “50 Heroes of Asia” by Time in October 2005.
  • In July 2016, Mirza published an autobiography titled Ace Against Odds chronicling her journey to the top
  • She was listed in the list of the “33 women who made India proud” published on The Economic Times
  • Mirza was part of 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine in 2016.
  •  She was appointed as UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia
