Young Indian skier Sahil Thakur will be the lone participant from the country at the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2024 in Gangwon in South Korea, starting on Friday. The 16-year-old will compete in men’s alpine skiing event, that starts on January 21, and ends five days later.
Interestingly, he is only the third Indian to feature at the Winter Youth Olympics. Meanwhile, the first participant at the event had come way back in 2012, when Aanchal Thakur was a part of the slalom and giant slalom alpine skiing events, in Austria.
Then in the 2016 edition in Norway, Saurabh competed in super-G, giant slalom, slalom and combined. Whereas, India did not have any participant at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Close to 1,900 athletes from 80 countries, are expected to compete in Gangwon 2024, and competition will be held in 15 disciplines. The event will officially start on January 19, and rhe closing ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 1.
