India’s top-ranked singles tennis player, Sahaja Yamalapalli, is on the verge of two biggest accomplishments of her career. The 23-year-old has reached the semifinal of the ITF W35 Punta Cana without dropping a set and could win her first W35 title and reach a new career high. Having gotten to 303 in the WTA ranking at the end of August, which happens to be her career-high ranking, Sahaja could just into the 200s based on her performance this week.
She’ll now face Czechia’s Darja Vidmanova in the semifinal for a spot in the finals. Sahaja has won two titles in 2024 (ITF W15 Los Angeles and ITF SoCal Pro Series), but her biggest one came back in December last year when she beat Ekaterina Makarova to win the ITF W25 Solapur.
