Roger Federer’s Speech at Dartmouth College could be a lesson for Indian tennis players

Roger Federer retired in September 2022, but still has been actively involved with the sport.

Roger Federer isn’t only the greatest tennis player ever, but also a great at motivating and delivering speeches. Just recently, the winner of 20 Grand Slams treated the outgoing batch of the Dartmouth College in Hanover to a special address, and that is going viral on social media. While the Swiss master touch upon various topics, but his analysis of his own game, is what is gaining a lot of popularity. Through that, Federer tries to touch on success in life in general, but also has something in it for upcoming or struggling tennis players.

Roger Federer’s Best Speech

Here’s what Federer said. “Perfection is impossible. In the 1,526 singles matches I played in my career, I won almost 80% of those matches. But what percentage of points did I win? 54%.

“In other words, even top ranked tennis players win barely more than half the points they play. When you lose ever second point on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot. You teach yourself to think: ‘Okay, I double faulted…it’s only a point.’

‘Okay, I came to the net and I got passed again…it’s only a point.’ Even a great shot, an overhead backhand smash that ends up on ESPN’s top 10 playlist – that too is just a point.

Here’s why I’m telling you this. When you’re playing a point, it has to be the most important thing in the world. And it is. But when it’s behind you, it’s behind you. This mindset is crucial – because it frees you to fully commit to the next point with intensity, clarity, and focus.”

Maybe Sumit Nagal Can Take a Cue

India’s best singles player Sumit Nagal has just achieved his career-high ranking of 77, after he won the Heilbronn Neckarcup 2024 Challenger event in Germany on Sunday. He has shown time and again this year, that he has all the makings of a top-50 player, or maybe even better. At the Australian Open, he got the better of Alexander Bublik in the first round. He also won the Chennai Challenger earlier this year. At the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, he won his first ever match too.

So, for him to get to the next level, as far as his game is concerned, he just needs to follow the Guru Mantra given by Roger Federer. And not just Nagal, this might just help a whole bunch of players like Yuki Bhambri, N Sriram Balaji, and Ramkumar Ramanathan as well.
