Repechage rounds in athletics at Paris Olympics? How will ‘lucky loser’ heat work

While the traditional format has been a cornerstone of the Olympics for over a century, the introduction of repechage rounds promises to add a new layer of drama and competition to the track and field events.

The Paris 2024 Olympics will witness a groundbreaking change in the format of track and field events, as the World Athletics Council has introduced repechage rounds for several disciplines. This innovative move aims to provide athletes with a second chance to qualify for the semifinals.

What is Repechage round?

A repechage round, often referred to as a “lucky loser” heat, offers athletes who fail to automatically qualify through the first round an additional opportunity to secure their place in the semifinals.

Essentially, it’s a second chance to compete for a spot in the next stage of the competition.

How does Repechage work?

The repechage rounds will be held for the 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, and 400m hurdles events. Athletes who finish outside the top three in their respective heats will compete in the repechage round. The top finishers from these rounds will then advance to the semifinals.

This new format guarantees at least two rounds of competition for every athlete in these events, increasing their chances of showcasing their talent on the Olympic stage.

New Era for Track and Field at Paris Olympics

World Athletics President Seb Coe expressed enthusiasm for the format change, stating that it will enhance the excitement and exposure of the sport during the Olympic period.

While the traditional format has been a cornerstone of the Olympics for over a century, the introduction of repechage rounds promises to add a new layer of drama and competition to the track and field events.

As the world eagerly awaits the Paris Olympics, the repechage rounds are set to create additional excitement and opportunities for athletes to shine.
